Roof Top Tents: Exploring the Pros and Cons of Elevated Camping

As outdoor enthusiasts, we always seek new and exciting ways to elevate our camping experiences. One option that has gained popularity in recent years is the roof top tent (RTT). Designed to provide a unique camping setup, RTTs offer convenience, versatility, and breathtaking views. However, like any camping gear, they come with their own set of pros and cons. We'll explore the pros and cons of roof top tents to help you decide if they are the right choice for your outdoor adventures.

Pros

  1. Easy Setup and Mobility

  2. Elevated Camping Experience

  3. Comfort and Convenience

Cons

  1. Cost

  2. Limited Space

  3. Vehicle Compatibility and Weight

Here are some of our top picks:

  1. iKamper SkyCamp 3.0 - $4000+

The standard in RTT but it does come with a price. Hardshell pop-up which makes it super easy to set up, durable, and water resistant. They sell replacement items like canvas and many accessories like shoe racks and annex rooms. Has a king-size bed that can sleep 4 adults.

  2. iKamper Skycamp DLX - $5000+

Has everything the SkyCamp 3.0 has but is an upgraded version. It’s compatible with Skycamp series accessories which is why we love iKamper. It comes with some key upgrades like storage, lighting, and biggest of all, a comfort 4" air and foam mattress that we hear is amazing.

  3. Naturnest Rooftop Tent Hard Shell - around $1000

A hardshell tent you can get on Amazon for under $1000. It has great reviews on YouTube and Amazon. Not a premium brand like iKamper but for the average camper or someone who wants to try out a RTT, this might be the option for you.

  4. SmittyBilt OVERLAND GEN2 - around $1200

Our first RTT that we used for about 3 years before upgrading to a new to us iKamper SkyCamp 2.0. This SmittyBilt is a softshell tent and we found that it was less durable in the wind. Compared with most hardshells, the softshell tents will be a bit harder to take down. Overall, this was a great first tent, it was built with quality materials, and we would recommend for anyone looking to begin their RTT journey.
